The Ministry of Industry and Trade announces a new call for proposals for brownfield regeneration projects, with funding of 200 million CZK
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has launched a new program to support the preparation phase of brownfield regeneration projects. Municipalities, city districts, and regions throughout the Czech Republic can now obtain subsidies for the preparation of project documentation and other materials necessary for the revitalization of unused sites and buildings for business use. A sum of 200 million crowns has been allocated for project preparation. The Ministry of Industry and Trade will start accepting applications on the 15th of August 2025.
“Many municipalities have the desire and vision to revitalize abandoned sites, but without quality project preparation, they will not get very far. And that is often the area where money is needed. Our goal is to help them to overcome this first obstacle and pave the way for unused brownfields to become viable places for business, services, and community life,” says Minister of Industry and Trade Lukáš Vlček.
According to a recent survey by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, eight out of ten mayors are interested in subsidies for project preparation. They identified the lack of funds for project documentation, assessments, and feasibility studies as the most common obstacle causing brownfields remain unused.
New subsidies will help municipalities cover these initial costs. The funds can be used, for example, for building permit documentation, environmental audits, feasibility studies, or for the preparation of tenders for construction work. The condition is that the resulting project must largely (by at least 50%) serve business purposes and be energy efficient, whether it involves the renovation of an old building or new construction.
How much money municipalities can obtain through the new support program depends on their size. The smallest municipalities, with up to 3,000 inhabitants, can receive up to 50 % of eligible costs. Municipalities with a population of up to 10,000 inhabitants can count on 40% support, and larger cities or regions can receive a 30% contribution. The amount of the subsidy will range from 0,5 milion CZK to 7.5 million CZK. Each applicant may submit a maximum of two applications.
“The call is designed to be ongoing, which means that there is no complicated scoring system or competition between municipalities. Anyone who meets the conditions and submits an application on time has a high chance of receiving a subsidy. A key condition will also be the finalisation of the tender and the conclusion of a contract between the municipality as the recipient of the subsidy and the supplier of project and other preparatory activities. Therefore, municipalities that have already started or just completed project preparation work will be supported. That is why we recommend not to delay the process of preparation of the grant application, but also the start of project work,” explains Jan Hana, head of the brownfield department at the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
Another condition for receiving the subsidy is that each supported project must be actually completed within 10 years, meaning that it must be built or renovated. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is counting on this continuity and is already preparing another subsidy program, which should be launched next year. It will offer municipalities, towns, associations of municipalities, and regions combined support, meaning not only a non-repayable subsidy, but also a preferential loan, thanks to which they will be able to actually complete their plans. The aim is to help mayors transform unused areas into modern spaces for business, community activities, or even municipal housing. Such a transformation has not only economic but also environmental and social benefits. It revitalizes abandoned sites, preserves the landscape, improves the quality of life for residents, and supports the development of local entrepreneurs.
